Samsung is acquiring SmartThings for $200 Million

SmartThings is a limited product line up available for $99 which lets you connect different devices at your home to connect with your smartphone or tablet. It includes a SmartSense Motion Sensor, Multi Sensor and GE Light & Appliance Plug-and-Control Power Outlet. This is in fact the future of our homes. Every house will be connected to a smartphone. Because smartphones and tablets sales are increasing day by day so big tech companies are focusing more on homes now.

According to TechCrunch, Samsung is in talks to purchase SmartThings. In this was Samsung will make its way in to smart homes. TechCrunch reported that deal is ongoing and Samsung will be buying the SmartThings in $200 million. Google has recently acquired Nest and Apple introduced its HomeKit platform at WWDC this year. So every tech giant is making its way into smart homes. Samsung will have to face its two big competitors Google and Apple first of all.

Samsung most likely bought the startup to get out ahead of Google’s Nest efforts. With this buy, Samsung obtains a mature home automation platform that just needs some marketing help. And Samsung has a hefty marketing budget.

Will Samsung be able to give a challenging competition to Apple and Google in smart home appliances? We’ll have to wait to see it.
