We Happy Few set out to be something that gamers have somewhat already experienced in a different setting. Obviously the setting for We Happy Few itself is pretty amazing but it gave off a more Bioshock vibe than an Ark vibe.
What It Was
By now you probably realize that We Happy Few was supposed to be a survival game. It’s an indie game being developed by Compulsion Games. The same guys that made Contrast. We Happy Few is set in a “drug fueled and retrofuturistic alternative 1960’s England”, in a town called Wellington Wells. Sounds cool right, that’s because it is. The citizens of the city in order to forget the tragedies of war (WWII) take a hallucinogenic drug fittingly called “Joy”. “Joy” puts them in a happy state of denial and leaves them with no morals.
The game was first shown at PAX 2015 where it was very well received. So well that it could actually become a problem for the developers. People felt that the game looked and felt like it had much more to offer than it really did. But the truth was that the game was nothing more that just another survival game where you tried to escape this mad city.
What It Will Be
Compulsion knew that making the type of game that people were expecting is not an easy job. It requires a lot of money, money that they didn’t have. So instead of setting up to be the next No Man’s Sky they decided to give the people what they wanted. Compulsion took the game to Kickstarter where they promised a complete story mode. They asked for 250,000$ and raised more than 300,000$.
At E3 2016 We Happy Few was showcased at the Microsoft Stage. This is where Gearbox stepped in. Compulsion were not looking to be published but rather wanted to self publish and show organic growth. But Gearbox would not have it and eventually convinced the team.
Now the game is set to release in April 13th, 2018 with a 60$ price tag. But now it’s less like Ark and could give Bioshock a run for its money.
