Samurai Showdown was a highly overlooked 2-D fighting game in the ’90s. It never reached the acclaim of Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat and had a very niche following. However, it looks like we could be getting a new Samurai Showdown in the US if the recent Samurai Showdown for PS4 and Xbox One rating by the ESRB is any indication.
Samurai Showdown for PS4 and Xbox One – A decade in waiting
Despite not being known by most gamers, Samurai Showdown saw a fairly frequent release of games on a number of platforms. With video games releasing regularly between 1993 to 2009, this ranges from arcades, home consoles, handheld consoles, and even mobiles. However, the last entry for the series was last seen in 2009 with Samurai Showdown Anthology for the PS3, Xbox 360, and the Nintendo Wii.
The new entry for the series is rebooting its 1993 original entry to give the series a much needed next-gen facelift.
The rating recently surfaced at the ESRB, which has some interesting points on the series:
The game was last spotted at PAX East about a month ago. Here is some gameplay:
I am sure that fans of the series will be ecstatic to play the game once more. Keep in mind that the fighting game community is oversaturated with games as it is, with very few games that actually are able to become staples of the genre.
While Samurai Showdown has a long journey ahead of it before it can reach the acclaim of its much more popular competitors like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat, the game still looks thoroughly engaging and fun.
The game is set to release for the Xbox One and PS4 some time in June, with a release on the PC and Nintendo Switch set for Winter 2019.
