With 2019 in its early days, we already have a first-hand report of some potentially good news and bad news for the Nintendo Switch to come. The good news is, that the rumored Pokemon RPG is said to be on the level of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The bad news is, you might have to wait till 2020 to play the game instead of 2019.
The new 2019 Pokemon RPG might not be coming in 2019 after all
King Zell is a trusted leaker in the industry and it seems that their recent posts on the gaming forum ResetEra have hinted that there is a strong chance that the Pokemon RPG for this year could be pushed to 2020, but the tradeoff here is that we can expect a Pokemon game to match the quality of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
At first people speculated that Zell was still confused about being in 2018, which is common as we are not even a full week into 2019. He later clarified that they are aware of the date and indeed referring to 2020.
When further probed about the post, Zell responded:
The posts from King Zell actually fit well with a quote from Pokemon CEO, Tsunekazu Ishihara:
“We want to make Pokémon fans say ‘this is what I’ve been waiting for’ by delivering a brand-new product packed with gameplay elements and plenty of new Pokémon to encounter.”
Perhaps the move towards an open world game for Pokemon would be a colossal change for the series. Admittedly fans have gotten tired of the linear progression of the series with a lack of freedom of movement, but if the series is headed towards giving fans a true RPG experience, complete with an open world, I don’t think it would be a problem.
Considering the massive acclaim and success that Breath of the Wild achieved in 2017 and continuing into 2018, we can only imagine the same success repeating for a Pokemon game and completely shaking the series by its foundation.
