PUBG, better known as PlayerUnknown’s Battleground is about to have a day in court as they have just started proceedings against Epic Games, the studio behind Fortnite. The parent company, Bluehole inc. has stated that Fortnite has decreased their user base and as such is causing harm in revenue to the company.
What is ironic about this whole debacle is that PUBG itself is build on the Unreal Engine 4 which happens to be owned by Epic Games, if you want a lesson in history, look up the infamous lawsuit between Dennis Dyack, Epic Games and Too Human and you will already have a fair idea that this is a one-sided case before it even began.
Bluehole is allegedly going to Epic Games on the grounds of Copyright Infringement, which is ironic yet again since the game mode (Battle Royale) is as old as Minecraft Hunger Games mod, to DayZ and then even earlier variations of the game mode that kept getting molded, reshaped and pushed through Steam in the form of H1Z1 and other projects we know today.
The entire situation is completely laughable at best as Bluehole is using the Epic Games engine and complaining to them about being unable to deliver on consumer satisfaction as they recently admitted. The game still runs absolutely horribly on any system, while Fortnite runs smooth as silk, offers cross-platform play, is free to play and is a much more consumer-friendly game as they are constantly releasing content for players to enjoy as opposed to PUBG that has been lacking in the latter.
Admittedly, Fortnite did start off as a PvE game by the name of “Save the World” and did expand to the Battle Royale game mode late last year, there are really no laws that forbid other games to do so and it seems that Bluehole is fighting a very steep uphill battle.
