The PlayStation Party feature is somewhat basic, and it’s been in a need for an overhaul for a while. If you’re interested in trying it out, you can do so through the PlayStation Preview Program.
PlayStation Party Features Getting an Overhaul
You can register at the PlayStation Preview Program for a chance to try out the new party features overhaul for the PS4.
The following features are currently in focus in the overhaul, and we’re expecting some major improvements, especially in terms of the audio quality.
- Increased maximum Party participants from 8 to 16
- Improved audio quality for voice chat
- Improved network connectivity
However, if you do want to try this out, you won’t be able to connect with your regular friends via party, as this is for members of the PlayStation Preview Program. The code you’ll be given can be used for 20 users, and you’ll see an Asterisk(*) in front of the user name of players that have been selected for this early access program.
In addition, U.S. testers will have early access to the chat transcription feature that will be available through Party and the PS4 Second Screen app. This feature allows you to convert Party voice chat to text on your Second Screen app, or enter text into your app which will be read aloud to other Party members. This feature is limited to US residents only.

PlayStation Party
The current chat and audio chat application for PlayStation is very barebones, and even when it’s working, the sound quality isn’t optimal. With so many better working voice chat applications like Discord, the PlayStation application isn’t up to mark and has very limited features. There isn’t even a push to talk option, or even audio enhancement settings.
