When you want absolute chaos and destruction you think of the Just Cause franchise. Just Cause 4 was released just yesterday across PS4, PC and Xbox One. The latest iteration in the popular series once again brings Rico Rodriguez to the forefront of mayhem and disruption. This time he is in search for answers about his father’s past and his involvement with Black Hand, the world’s most powerful private army run by Gabriella Morales. The only problem is, according to preliminary tests, Just Cause 4 Resolution on PS4 seems to be less than promising. Let’s find out why.
Just Cause 4 Resolution on PS4 and PS4 Pro revealed, Downscales to 720p in Graphically Intensive gameplay
It has become evident after playing on the PS4 version of the game that the outdated hardware of PS4, especially the base model, is showing its age. A game like Just Cause 4 where there is an open world environment and a lot of things happening simultaneously, PS4’s hardware seems to struggle to output a steady 1080p resolution.
Things get especially worse when you have a lot of explosions and destruction going on in the game, which is only the whole point of the game. In such graphically intensive situations the base PS4 samples down the resolution to a mere 720p. The PS4 Pro, however, manages to do somewhat better and for the most part, manages to keep the resolution at 1080p.
The problem, however, is that according to preliminary tests, even in occasions where there isn’t much happening on screen, the base model of PS4 still only manages to output a 720p resolution. It looks like the developers were left with no option other than to sacrifice the resolution to keep a steady framerate going. On the bright side, the game manages to run at a steady 30fps majority of the time by trading resolution and graphical quality for better fps.
Needless to say that if one wants to experience the best possible experience Just Cause 4 has to offer, a capable gaming PC is your best bet or if you want to take the console route then the Xbox One X seems to perform marginally better than the PS4.
I must also add that on top of all the graphical tradeoffs, the PS4 version of the game makes a hefty use of motion blur and shimmering aliasing. This becomes very evident very quickly when you start exploring the world. Now, of course, I don’t expect anyone to buy a gaming PC for a single game to play it at its best but if you have the combination of a gaming PC and console, take it from me, you want to get the game on PC. No questions asked.
This is all I had to say about Just Cause 4 resolution problem on PS4. Let me know in the comments if you have noticed the same while playing on your PS4.
