We are now in the midst of the new revolution of CPU chipsets as we usher in the new 8th Generation Intel chips enter the market, but AMD is fighting back with Ryzen 7, at a better price. Let’s take a look at a few Intel 8th Gen Core i7 vs AMD Ryzen 7 CPU Benchmarks to determine the new champion of the chip wars!
TechSpot has conducted a thorough testing of all the prominent chips that are poised to be on the consumers shopping list for the upcoming holiday sales. The site has taken pitted several processors in head to head comparisons in gaming benchmarks to determine a winner.
Intel 8th Gen and Amd Ryzen PC:
On the Intel side, we have the following systems representing Kaby Lake and Coffee Lake:
Coffee Lake:
- Intel Core i7-8700K
- Intel Core i5-8600K and Intel Core i5-8400
- Asrock Z370 Taichi
- 32GB DDR4-3200 RAM (CL14)
- Samsung SSD 850 Evo 4TB
- Radeon RX Vega 64 LC
- Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Kaby Lake:
- Intel Core i7-7700K
- Intel Core i5-7600K
- Asrock Z270 Taichi
- 32GB DDR4-3200 RAM (CL14)
- Samsung SSD 850 Evo 4TB
- Radeon RX Vega 64 LC
- Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
And here is the system build for Ryzen 7 & Ryzen 5:
- AMD Ryzen 7 1800X
- AMD Ryzen 5 1600X and AMD Ryzen 5 1500X
- Asrock X370 Taichi
- 16GB DDR4-3200 RAM (CL14)
- Samsung SSD 850 Evo 4TB
- Radeon RX Vega 64 LC
- Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Due to current issues with 32GB of DDR4 RAM and Ryzen, the reviewer maintained parity of bus speed and (CAS)Latency between RAM 3200 MHz/14 Respectively when giving the Ryzen system 16 GB of RAM.
Techspot took the time and effort to benchmark 9 of the most popular games that gamers are likely to play on their systems, while some of these games still stand as primers of gaming benchmarks through the ages.
- Civilization IV
- Dawn of War III
- F1 2017
- Overwatch
- Project Cars 2
- PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
- Rainbow Six Siege
- Total War Warhammer 2
The games were tested on 720p, 1080p, and 1440p resolutions to help assess the performance of the CPUs on all levels of gaming. All of the games were run at stock clock speeds, and were all on the second highest graphical option, with the exception of Battlefield 1 which was set to Ultra.
You can go through all the benchmarks on your own, but if you would like to skip to each page and see which chip of your choice managed to reign supreme.
Here are a few quick benchmarks of popular games running at 1080p:

When we come down to brass tacks and see the writing on the wall, there is a lot of subjectivity that warrants which CPU is truly the best, but in the end it all waters down to how well your pockets are lined with money.
Performance Comparison between Intel Core i7-8700K, i5-8600K, 8400 versus AMD Ryzen 7 1800X, R5 1600X, 1500X:
We have seen significant differences when we see that the Core i5 – 8600K was almost 25% better when compared to the Ryzen 5 1600, meaning Intel offers longevity and greater complementary benefits when paired with a powerful GPU.
When we talk about which chip offers the best ratio of performance to price, the clear winner is the Core i5-8400, whcih offers some relatively cheap cost per frame, and it offers great future proofing due to 6 cores, it can offer you great gaming and software performance. While the Core i5-8400 costs slightly more than its 4 core equal, the Ryzen 1500X, more cores are better in the long term.
Coming to the higher rank in the chip chain, we see that the Intel 8th Gen Core i5-8600K and its superior are indeed something you would want to put on your wishlist but they would require a significant GPU to prevent bottlenecking, while the Core i5-8400 offers great parity in terms of CPU working in sync with the GPU and vice versa to deliver equal performance.
Conclusion:
When we reach the conclusion, and look at everything on the surface level, it is evident that the Core i5-8400 is the best bang for your buck. Albeit the Ryzen 5 series is also comparable to the Core i5-8400 with menial differences in benchmarks, time will be the best judge over who will win the chip wars.
