System Wide Super Sampling Update for PS4

PS4 Pro console

Finally some good news for PS4 pro owners. Sony just released a System Wide Super Sampling Update for PS4 firmware under version number 5.50. This update brings system-wide supersampling to the PS4. This update is especially beneficial for PS4 pro owners who use a 1080p display with their PS4 as they normally wouldn’t be able to get the full potential out of their consoles on 1080p displays.Since the PS4 Pro is capable of running games on 4k, through this update it will now be able to upscale the resolution on a 1080p display to make it look sharper giving you the feel of higher resolution.

Super Sampling setting

The new supersampling feature can be toggled by going into the settings menu and display options. It can be enabled by ticking the box although depending on a game, it can either have no effect on the visuals, or it can have an impact on the frame rate.

“Supersampling mode allows you to get picture quality comparable with 4K even when connecting PS4 Pro to a TV with a resolution of 2K or below

The effect depends on the game – not every improvement will be noticeable. In some games, you can also reduce the frame rate per second.”

List of notable games that will finally offer super-sampling on 1080p displays:

As mentioned above System Wide Super Sampling Update for PS4 may cause some games to run at lower fps. In the end, it comes down to personal preference if lower fps over improved graphics is something people would settle for. Good thing is the setting is not customary and can be turned on or off at will.
