Huawei Mate 20 Pro

We are only half way through October and the smartphones keep on coming. Just recently, Huawei announced their latest flagship, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. The phone comes in three variants, namely, Mate 20 pro, Mate 20 and the Mate 20 Lite. As we know the Pro version of the phone is the most high-end version with all the latest spec offerings. The standard Mate 20 is a compromise between budget and performance while the mate 20 Lite is the cheapest of them all.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 and Mate 20 Lite: An Overview

Huawei Mate 20 pro is the recently announced flagship smartphone from Huawei. The phone features an abundance of exciting new features coupled with top of the line specs. The phone features a beautiful 6.39 inches AMOLED display with an impressive 87.9% screen-to-body ratio. To fill that screen, the phone features an extremely high 1440 x 3120 pixels of resolution that translates to 538 ppi density. This without a doubt ensures a sharp and crisp image that is an absolute delight to view.

Huawei’s much acclaimed HiSilicon Kirin 980 (7 nm) will finally make its debut in the Mate 20 Pro. It is a 7nm processor which is significantly faster than the Snapdragon 845. The phone will come installed with the latest Android Pie OS. As for the memory, the phone will boast 128 GB ROM and 6 GB RAM.  There is also an expansion slot for microsd.

Coming to the most exciting offering of the phone, that is, the camera or shall I say “Cameras”, Huawei has completely changed the game with how the three cameras at the back of the Mate 20 Pro are positioned. Ditching the one-above-the-other configuration of camera modules that we saw in Huawei’s P20 Pro, this time Huawei has chosen a square like positioning of the three cameras and the flashlight.

The primary camera is an enormous 40MP, f/1.8, 27mm wide lens whereas the ultrawide lens is a 20 MP, f/2.2,16mm. The third and last camera is an 8 MP, f/2.4, 80mm telephoto lens.

Apart from all that, there is a truly remarkable and innovative feature that has caught the attention of many people. the Huawei mate 20 Pro will be able to charge other devices using its enormous 4200 mAH battery via wireless charging. Huawei is calling this feature “Reverse Charging”. The way it works is that you place any NFC enabled phone on the back of Huawei Mate 20 Pro and it will wirelessly charge the other device.

In terms of physical design, as you can see the Huawei mate 20 pro does have a notch but compared to what we have seen on the recently launched Pixel 3 by Google, Mate 20 Pro’s notch is not all that noticeable. THe phone feels nice and slick and it weighs a reasonable 189g. Considering all the specs and the enormous battery that Huawei has managed to house inside the mate 20 Pro, the weight and size of the phone seems completely reasonable.

Huawei also announced the cheaper version of its mate 20 series of smartphones. The mate 20 Lite features a 6.3 inches 1080 x 2340 pixels AMOLED display. With an 81.7% screen-to-body ratio and 409 ppi density which is considerably lower than the Pro variant but it would still be sharp and crisp.

As for the processor, as you might have expected, the Lite variant of the phone will not feature the 7nm Kirin 980 chip but instead Hisilicon Kirin 710. The Hisilicon Kirin 710 is a 12nm chip which of course is not quite as fast as the 980 but keeping the price of the phone in mind it should do a good enough job. In terms of memory, the lite variant will offer 64 GB ROM and an option between 4 and 6 GB RAM,

The phone will come installed with the latest Android Pie OS. The battery on Mate 20 Lite is 3750 mAH which again is considerably lower than the Pro variant but these are the sort of compromises you make with the Lite versions of any smartphone.

The Camera on Huawei Mate 20 Lite is a dual-camera setup on the back. The Primary camera is a 20 MP, f/1.8, 27mm (wide), while the secondary being a 2 MP, depth sensor.

The standard version of the phone, that is, the Mate 20 sits sort of the in the middle of the Lite and Pro variants. Both price wise and features wise. Physically some would argue that mate 20 is the most pleasing to the eye. It has no traditional notch but instead a dew drop style notch which is minuscule in comparison to the notches on other phones.

The Mate 20 features a 6.53 inches 1080 x 2244 pixels IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. The Pixel density comes down to 381 ppi density which is the lowest among all the variants. This is definitely interesting considering that the Mate 20 is priced higher than the Lite variant.

Good news is that the Mate 20 same as the Pro variant is powered by the latest Kirin 980 chip. The phone will come installed with the latest Android Pie OS. The battery on Mate 20 is a 4000 mAH which sits rights in the middle of the Pro and Lite variants capacity wise.

As for the cameras, the mate 20 follows the Pro’s configuration with three rear cameras. a 12 MP, f/1.8, 27mm (wide), 1/2.3,a 16 MP, f/2.2, 17mm (ultrawide) and an 8 MP, f/2.4, 52mm (telephoto) lens.

Also Id like to mention that both the Lite and the standard version of the phones feature a headphone jack while the most expensive, the pro variants do not. So this is something you should keep in mind.
