How to recover Amnesia Rebirth Save Files on PC (Steam/GOG/EGS)

Amnesia Rebirth is a horror-adventure game from Frictional Games. It is now available on PC via Steam, GOG and Epic Games Store, PS4, and Xbox One. If you are on PC and want to recover the Amnesia Rebirth save files, here is how you can do that.

The game has a mostly positive rating on Steam, and similar to SOMA, has a fairly high critics score on Metacritic.

Recover Amnesia Rebirth Save Files

If for whatever reason, you have lost your save files, here is how you can recover it.

Check if Save files are being written

Before you do so, make sure that the save files exist in the first place, and are being written properly. Head to the following locations to check.

Vista, 7 & 8.x: Documents\My Games\Amnesia Rebirth\Main
Linux: ~/.local/share/frictionalgames/Amnesia Rebirth/Main
Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Frictional Games/Amnesia Rebirth/Main

If you don’t see your save files here, that means you can’t recover those. This is because the game wasn’t given admin permission to create those save files in the first place. To do this, simply run the game as admin so future save files are properly written.

Save files exist in a folder with your Steam user name

If this is the case then restart Steam to force the game to update to the latest version. This should resolve your issues.

Save files exist in a folder called Default

The developers accidentally released a patch without Steam Cloud saves, which meant that save files ended up in the Default folder. To resolve this use one of the following techniques

Manually log in as Default user

Right-click Amnesia Rebirth
Click Properties…
Click the “SET LAUNCH OPTIONS”
Enter: -user Default

Copy files to the other folder

Select all files in the Default folder and press ctrl+c
Go into the folder with your Steam user name. (for example daniel_123891230F)
Press ctrl+v
