The error in question may occur mid-game, however, it is more likely that it will occur right when you start the game. Currently, it is not known what causes this error but according to personal tests and forum threads, it seems that a simple file verification on steam or GOG can resolve the problem.
Here is how you do it.
- Open steam.
- From the Library section, right-click on Imperator Rome and select Properties from the menu.
- Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game files… button.
- Steam will verify the game’s files – this process may take several minutes.
Once done relaunch the game and see if the problem persists or not.
GOG Galaxy users
- Launch GOG Galaxy and go to the library on the top
- Click on Imperator Rome game icon
- Click on the down arrow on MORE option
- Select Manage installation
- Now click on Verify / Repair….
In addition to these make sure that you have the latest GPU drivers installed on your PC. Also, make exceptions for the game in any Antivirus software that you might have.
