Dirt 5 is a racing video game from Codemasters. The title is the latest entry in the long-running franchise and is now available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It is also coming to next-generation consoles including Xbox Series S|X and the PlayStation 5. If you are on PC and are running into the Dirt 5 crash at launch issue, here is how you can fix it.
The title currently has a Mixed rating on PC, and it is mostly due to the performance issues players are facing.
Dirt 5 Crash at launch
A few users have reported that they are running into a crash while trying to launch the game. Codemasters is aware of this, and have released a new patch addressing this as well. If you are still running into it, however, here are a few things you can try.
FIX 1: UPDATE YOUR GPU DRIVERS
Make sure you are on the latest versions of your GPU drivers. You can download these from the links below
FIX 2: UPDATE YOUR WINDOWS
Make sure you are on the latest version of your operating system. To update your Windows, follow the steps below.
- Click on Start, and go to Settings
- Here, select Update and Security
- Click on Windows Update
If you have a pending update, it will give you the details for it.
Fix 3: Launch the game as admin
- Open your Steam library and right-click on Dirt 5
- Select Properties, and now head to the LOCAL FILES tab
- Here, select BROWSE LOCAL FILES. This will take you to where the game is installed
- Now, in this folder, locate the executable (.exe file) for the game
- Right-click on it, and click Properties
- In the compatibility tab, check “Run this program as an administrator”
Fix 4: Make sure the game is updated
Sometimes, game updates don’t appear automatically, and you might have to restart Steam in order for it to show up.
Fix 5: Verify game files
- Right-click Dirt 5 in your Steam library
- Click “Properties”
- Navigate to the “Local Files” tab
- Click “Verify integrity of game cache”
Fix 6: Reinstall Dirt 5
The last thing you can try is reinstalling the game. This has helped a few users, as a last resort.
