This Wonderful Chrome Extension enable you to edit text from images on Web

What if I told you that you can now edit text from images on Web? You may think of it as some quite difficult procedure for doing so, but well, it’s more than simple! Thanks to a new Chrome extension. Now there is no need for downloading image editing softwares to edit text from a web image. The small, simple Chrome extension named Project Naptha lets you edit, copy, translate and even erase the text from the image available on web.

The Chrome extension is developed by Kewin Kwok. Here is the brief description of Project Naptha:

Project Naptha automatically applies state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms on every image you see while browsing the web. The result is a seamless and intuitive experience, where you can highlight as well as copy and paste and even edit and translate the text formerly trapped within an image.

Let’s see how the Chrome extension performs this function. The extension runs on Optical Character Recognition OCR algorithms of two major Tech Giants i.e. Microsoft and Google. The first one is Stroke Width Transform algorithm developed by Microsoft Research for detecting text in natural scenes. While the latter one is Google’s Tesseract engine. Project Naptha makes use of technique named ‘inpainting’ to reconstruct images after you edit the text. That’s all not, the powerful Chrome extension lets you translate the text on the fly. Project Naptha supports a wide range of translation services.

The extension is absolutely FREE and can be installed from here. Once you installed it, simply refresh the page. Head to a web image having text on it. Drag the cursor to text region and you will notice your cursor turning I-beam. Now, simply select the text and press Right Click to perform variety of functions.

At the moment, the extension has got some limitations. The text need to be under 30 degrees of rotation to carry out the edition options. You may also see some text not being able to edit. However, the developer Kwok has promised to expand the project. In future, the support for vertical text will also be added. Moreover, the Firefox extension of the project will also be released in coming weeks.

This is really quite something, loving. No need for image editors. As all comes in just a single extension. I am enthusiastic about the extension. Hope you are too.

Do tell us your experience of using the extension.

Have fun 🙂 🙂 🙂
