Apple’s slowly improved iCloud since it transitioned from MobileMe, but this year its getting a serious upgrade and it is being transformed to iCloud Drive . On stage at WWDC 2014, Apple’s SVP of Software Craig Federighi introduced us to a better way to manage files with the new iCloud Drive.
Apple iCloud Drive one place for all documents. This is very similar to Dropbox. Files can be viewed and sync between Mac, iOS and even Windows. Each app you use with iCloud Drive gets its own folder inside the interface, which you can access through Finder, and files are synced across OS X, iOS, and Windows platform. You will, of course, need OS X Yosemite to take advantage of the feature, but Apple hopes you’ll ditch Dropbox and Google Drive for iCloud Drive’s deep OS support.
In OS X Yosemite, enjoy better syncing, fast message fetching and better file support. With this in mind, Apple’s taken inspiration from Mac apps like Sparrow and Airmail and launched MailDrop, a new feature by letting you send large files (up to 5GB) over email via iCloud. Steve Jobs once voted to destroy Dropbox. That didn’t happen. Now after years, Apple has finally launched its true Dropbox killer. Apple fans will love iCloud Drive for syncing files between their Apple devices, but Apple likely won’t convince Dropbox and Google Drive lovers from switching, especially since iCloud Drive storage costs a lot more. Also, while iCloud Drive works on Windows, it seems if Apple will open up APIs so mobile developers on Android and Windows Phone could adopt the same storage platform.
