How to Install Android 4.4 KitKat Update Manually on your Nexus 4

About a week back, Google rolled out the Android 4.4 KitKat OTA update for Nexus 4 devices. Although most of the Nexus 4 devices have got the OTA update. However there are still some users which have not got Android 4.4 KitKat update on their Nexus 4. For such users, here we have got an easy manual way of installing Android 4.4 KitKat update on their device.

The method works on the principle of loading the OTA zip on the phone using a side load command. You just need to boot your device in Recovery mode to carry out the whole procedure.

Note: The method told ahead does not want your device to be ‘rooted’ or unlock the boot-loader. Neither it wipes your data nor it affect your warranty.

Steps of Manually Installing Android 4.4 KitKat Update on Nexus 4:

Before proceeding make sure you have connected your Nexus device and PC. Don’t forget to download the ADB/Fastboot drivers from here.

Step 1:  Now, it’s time to setup ADB environment on your PC. Download the ADB/Fastboot files on your PC. Here are the download links depending upon the PC, you use.

Step 2:  Make a new folder on the desktop of your PC named ‘Google’ and copy all the ADB files here.

Step 3:  Download the Android 4.4 KitKat OTA update here. Rename it to ‘OTA.zip’.

Step 4:  Copy the folder inside the ‘Google’ folder created on Desktop.

Step 5:  Boot your Nexus 4 device in Recovery Mode. To do so, switch your phone off. Press ‘Volume Up’, ‘Volume Down’ and ‘Power’ keys simultaneously. This will boot your phone in Bootloader mode. Select the ‘Recovery Mode’ and press ‘Power’ key to proceed.

Step 6:  After booting in Recovery Mode, your device will display an Android logo with red exclamation mark. Now press ‘Volume Up’ and ‘Power’ keys simultaneously again to boot in stock Android recovery.

Note: It may not be done in first attempt so you may need to try two three times.

Step 7:  When booted in stock Android recovery, select the option ‘Apply update from ADB’ using Volume keys and press ‘Power’ key to proceed.

Step 8:  Run Command Prompt on your PC. Navigate to ‘Google’ folder on your PC using CMD.

Step 9:  Run the following command:

‘adb sideload ota.zip’

The process will be automatically started. Installation files will be copied to your handset.

Step 10: If you have not already modified system files, the process will not generate any errors. After completion, select ‘Reboot System Now’ option to boot your Nexus 4 device to Android 4.4 KitKat. Be patience during first boot as it may take your few minutes.
