Looks like AMD has decided to take Intel head-on in its race towards more CPU cores and threads. With more competition between these two, we can expect some pretty crazy sounding CPUs coming our way in the future. We had an idea previously that AMD was in the works to release 32 core processor but the date and name wasn’t confirmed. As it turns out the 32 core processor is going to be the AMD Threadripper 2990X. Moreover, AMD is also going to release a 24 Core and 48 threads processor which would be the AMD Threadripper 2950X. AMD Threadripper 2990X and Threadripper 2950X both will be releasing on August 13, 2018.
These processors would be geared more towards content creators as the plethora of cores would really be utilized in rendering processes. For gaming, we think these processors will be an overkill since most games won’t need more than 6 cores to run at full potential. The AMD Threadripper 2990X and Threadripper 2950X capabilities would be best utilized in a workstation computer, video editing, and animations.
AMD Threadripper 2990X and Threadripper 2950X Price
According to rumors, the AMD Threadripper 2990X and Threadripper 2950X would go for 1500 USD and 1150 USD respectively. The prices are of course not confirmed so expect some variation of the prices listed here.
In the other news, MSI and Gigabyte are rumored to be working on X399 chipset motherboards for the upcoming Threadripper CPUs. Existing X399 motherboards will support the upcoming Threadripper CPUs after a Bios update but they won’t be able to overclock the processors. The 250W TDP exceeds the capabilities of existing X399 motherboards and hence MSI and Gigabyte are looking to release revamped X399 motherboards.
This is it, for now, we will keep you posted as more info becomes available. So make sure to check back.
