AMD has been AWOL from the GPU scene for a while now, with nothing to match Nvidia’s graphics cards, even from last year, AMD has been keeping a low profile but we know they are up to something as evidenced by the recent Horizon Event held at San Francisco where AMD rolled out the first details of its upcoming 7nm Instinct GPUs as well as CPUs. However, all of that is due later next year, for now, AMD’s latest GPU is the Radeon RX 590 and we finally have some data to work with. Official Benchmarks for the card are out as well as the full specs are out now.
AMD Radeon RX 590 Specifications and Price
The Radeon RX 590 features a 256-bit bus and a 256 GB/s bandwidth. It has a Vram of 8 gigs and a base clock of 1469 MHz. Moreover, the boost clock is 1545 MHz and the memory clock a decent 8 Gbps. The graphics card will also feature 2304 stream processors, same as last years RX 580 and RX 480.
The specs on paper don’t seem all that impressive I know, but AMD has managed to gain a 12% performance boost over the previous RX 580. They have accomplished this mainly due to the refined Polaris architecture now utilizing 12nm fabrication process which has made possible the slightly higher clock speeds and a slightly higher Compute rate which is at 7.1 TFLOPS as compared to last year’s 6.2 TFLOPS.
However, none of this seems even slightly impressive until you hear of the price, the RX 590 will go for a reasonable $279. A graphics card that is significantly better than the most popular mid-tier GPU on the market, the GTX 1060 6GB, would retail for about 30 to 40 USD less than the GTX 1060 6GB.
It makes sense for AMD to target Nvidia’s most popular consumer-grade card. With prices soaring through the roof for Nvidia’s RTX line, the GTX 1060 6 GB is going nowhere and hence AMD’s decision to rival it.
AMD Radeon RX 590 Official Benchmarks, better than a GTX 1060?

Thanks to our friends over at Videocardz.com, we were able to get our hands on the official benchmarks scores straight from AMD. Do note that these are not independent test scores, the tests were done by AMD and may not reflect real-world performance.
All tests were performed at a 1080p resolution with ‘maximum settings’.
We can clearly see how the RX 590 outperforms its predecessor as well as its competition, the GTX 1060. There is easily a 10-15 percent performance gain over the 580 as well as 1060. And for the price of $279 you cannot go wrong if you are in the market for a mid-tier GPU. That being said, you should, however, wait for unofficial reviews and benchmarks as well just in case.
